I need help filing my return. I’ve tried to file my tax return, but the IRS is asking me for my identity protection (IP) Pin. What is an IP Pin?

If the IRS is asking you for a PIN before you file, more than likely they are asking for an IP PIN otherwise known as an Identity Protection Personal Identification Pin. This 6-digit pin is assigned to eligible taxpayers in attempts to prevent identity fraud by the use of a social security number and to prevent the unauthorized filings of personal and business tax returns.

This IP Pin can be requested online and is often sent by way of the U.S. Postal mail to the address on file with the IRS. The IRS will require this PIN each time a tax return is filed using the associated social security number. In the event a paper return was filed, the IRS will hold up processing until they verify the tax return is associated with the proper taxpayer and IP PIN information is correct.
